Colin Hoare

Known for his realistic portrait paintings and pen and watercolour wash drawings, Palmerston North artist Colin Hoare took a slightly new direction in his artistic career while recuperating from a hip operation in late 2016. The time off work allowed Hoare to contemplate the direction of his art and to experiment with texture, colour and image. Colin, a sign writer by trade also gave thought to the skill sets needed for his trade being replaced by computers, commercial printers and new software programs which allow almost anyone to replicate the skills of the classical sign writer and even those of the traditional artist. Concerned that his work skills might be lost to future sign writers, Colin has produced a series of paintings which reflect his skills and abilities as both an artist and commercial sign writer; a combination which seeks to celebrate and document his talents and concerns for both areas of artistic ability.  Given Time and Space: Abstracted Imagery by Colin Hoare is a collection of paintings that is less representational than his previous work, moving toward the abstract and even the surreal. With time to cogitate the future and the space to create large and robust canvases, Hoare delivers an exhibition worthy of the two skill-sets he possesses and uses to advantage in his work as sign writer and artist. “My initial aim is to produce work that is big and bright…I am trying to create paintings that when displayed would ‘Lift a room!’” Perhaps only a diversion from his career as a portraitist, Hoare’s current work is a direct reaction to the muse that leads this creative soul.

Colin Hoare is a self-taught artist whose talent was recognised at the 2016 FADAS (Feilding and District Art Society) Members Exhibition where he won three awards for his paintings including a Premier Award for Best of Show. At the 2015 FADAS Members Exhibition he won two awards and at the FADAS Gallipoli Centennial Exhibition a painting by Hoare won ‘Best Painting–Oil’. Colin’s skill and abilities have also been utilised when he judged paintings at other FADAS events.

In Palmerston North, Colin’s small portraits grace the ‘Wall of Fame’ at George Street Café, Moxies, a local artistic landmark in the city. In its September/October 2014 issue, The New Zealand Artist chose a portrait by Hoare for its cover and featured a five-page spread illustrating the variety of his artwork. Paintings by Hoare were selected for exhibition at the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Awards Exhibition 2014 and at the Wairarapa’s Wai Art Portrait Awards. Hoare also exhibits his latest work at other major art exhibitions throughout New Zealand. In addition to exhibiting at the Annual FADAS Art Expo in Palmerston North, Hoare’s work is regularly on display at Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts. Colin’s other interests include motorsport, kart racing, his four children and his family who “are my inspiration.”

Given Time and Space: Abstracted Imagery by Colin Hoare will open on Friday, 6th January from 5-7pm. The public is warmly invited to view the exhibition and to meet the artist. Colin Hoare will also be painting in the gallery several times during his exhibition; please contact Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts for dates and times at 06 355 4278 or at
